Chajes, Tzevi Hirsch
(1805-55)
   Galician rabbi and scholar. He was rabbi at Zolkiev (1829-52) and Kalisz (1852-5). He was influenced by Nahman Krochmal and corresponded with leading maskilim of Galicia and Italy (such as Solomon Judah Rapoport, Samuel David Luzzatto and Isaac Samuel Reggio). Although he introduced modern critical methods into talmudic and cognate studies, he was a defender of Orthodoxy. He wrote on the principles of the written and oral law, the Targums and midrash, and the Talmud.
